At Humane Warriors Rescue Ranch - located on a beautiful, peaceful property in Connecticut - horses rescued from the cruel realities of the slaughter pipeline are given the chance to heal alongside Veterans and First Responders carrying wounds of their own. Here, trust is rebuilt one quiet moment at a time, proving that sometimes the greatest healing happens when two lives are given a second chance.
Combating a Cruel Industry
Thousands of horses enter the slaughter pipeline every year. Many have spent their lives faithfully serving people—working on farms, carrying riders, competing, or simply being trusted companions. When they become too old, injured, sick, or no longer useful to their owners, many are sold at livestock auctions where "kill buyers" purchase them for transport to slaughter facilities outside the United States.
The horses endure fear, stress, neglect, and long journeys before ever reaching their destination. Then, they face the terror that awaits them, that will end their lives.
Paws of War is actively fighting for a future where no horse ever endures that horror, and Humane Warriors Rescue Ranch interrupts their journey to the unthinkable. By rescuing horses before they disappear into the slaughter pipeline, we give them something they may have never known: Safety. Kindness. Trust. And a future.
But the mission doesn't end there. These rescued horses become partners in healing; helping Veterans and First Responders rebuild confidence, trust, purpose, and hope after the invisible wounds of military service or emergency response.
It's a place where two lives—both carrying trauma—can find a new beginning together.
Help Save a Horse. Help Heal a Hero.
With your kind support, a rescued horse doesn't just find a safe place to land. A Veteran doesn’t just find a therapy program. Together, they discover trust, purpose, healing, and a future neither thought was possible. Join us in giving both the second chance they deserve.
Horses like sweet Delilah are discarded when they are no longer of use to their owners.
How Horses Facilitate Healing
Horses don’t judge or ask questions. They simply respond honestly to the emotions of the person standing beside them. Naturally intuitive, horses sense stress, anxiety, confidence, calmness, and trust. It is their unique sensitivity that allows Veterans and First Responders to become fully present in the moment; often for the first time in years.
Working with horses encourages:
Emotional regulation
Confidence
Trust
Patience
Communication
Responsibility
Mindfulness
Purpose
Sometimes healing doesn't begin with words. Sometimes, it starts with a horse gently resting their head against someone who has forgotten what peace feels like.

A Second Chance for Chris and Darla
When Marine Corps Veteran Chris Aubin came to Humane Warriors Rescue Ranch, he was struggling after leaving military service and had survived a suicide attempt. Traditional treatments helped only temporarily, but working alongside rescued horses changed everything.
Chris formed an extraordinary bond with Darla—a horse saved from the slaughter pipeline. Eventually, he adopted her, giving both of them a new future.
